Winner of the 2018 Katherine
Prize Peoples' Choice Award Beasley had two finalist works selected for the 2018 Katherine Prize. Gently Cascading Memories of What Might Have Been (Beige) was selected from the body of work produced for “7 Skins (before Envious Time Will Have Fled)”. The second piece, When Morning Sun falls on Nitmiluk Rock, was painted specifically for the Katherine Prize and is a direct response to the sunlight falling on the distinctive mixed ochres of the rock face at Nitmiluk Gorge (also known as Katherine Gorge). The morning sun lends these rocks a distinctive pinkish hue that hardens to red and yellow ochre colours as the light becomes harsher as the heat rises. The contrasting colours evoke the changing temperatures between the cool shadow and the sun-bleached heat. The majestic solid and yet occasionally precarious rocky sculptural forms shaped by river, rain and heat nobly support life struggling on sundrenched ledges and more still taking sweet refuge in the cool embrace of cursory shade. |
